OBS settings for recording so I don’t forget half of this stuff in a month #
Setup guide from scratch. #
Hiding menu bar #
Useful to get rid of extra distractions. Go to:
- System Preferences
- Dock & Menu bar
- Check off automatically hide and show menu bar.
- If you delete the settings here:
/Users/dky/Library/Application Support/obs-studioyou reset all settings to factory.
Display capture settings #
- Optimize for recording, I will not be streaming.
- I select Display 1(3840x2160)
- Either 60 or 30, but prefer 60 when possible.
- Let it do it’s thing.
- Add a display capture. I give it a name like
Dell U2720Q, this is your large27"monitor. Crop is set to none
- Once these settings are all made, and you inspect the video and it’s still blurry do the following.
- OBS => Video
- You should see the base at
3840x2160 - Match the output to that setting. Sometimes it’s set to
1280x720after auto configuration. - So Base (Canvas) Resolution is
3840x2160and Output(Scaled) Resolution is set to3840x2160.
Shortcuts #
- OBS => Preferences => Hotkeys => Set start recording to
F11. Set stop recording toF12
Audio Tweaks #
- Right click on the Cog in the Audio Mixer area.
- Select properties => Set to
Scarlett Solo USB - Go back to the Cog and go to
Advanced Audio properties, Check off theMonobox so we can get both sides of the audio. - Cog => Filters => Noise Supression to add Nose Suppression to the audio.
OBS microphone/Scarlett Solo setup notes #
- Note the middle dial is not used for anything that we are working with, it’s for an instrument input gain not the mic.
- I don’t use the
AIRbutton but it adds a radio broadcaster sound to the audio. - Make sure you have the Phantom power turned on. This is the
+48vbutton right under the gain. - Can’t hear oneself after everthing is plugged in. Make sure the Audio jack is secure and not funky. I had an issue with the
goldaudio adapter so I went to the black plastic one. At least it works. - Make sure the gain isn’t so high that you pick up all sorts of noise and background sounds.
- If you are recording and only hear one side, you are in sterio mode and not in mono. Make sure it’s set to mono to pick up both sides of the headphones.
Hardware specific notes #
- Dell primary = 3840 x 2160
- Dell secondary = 1920 x 1080
- Macbook (non m1 - legacy 13) = 2560 x 1600
- FPS = Either 60 or 30 but prefer 60.
- Dell U2720q - largest
- Dell U2312hm - to your right smaller of the two
